The Sidewalk project is a Partnership between Perth YMCA and Perth North Church, its aim is to develop relationships with young people, so that their holistic needs can be met, this can include issues linked to alcohol or substance misuse but also other issues such as education, employment or personal family issues.

The Project delivers street based youthwork within the City Centre of Perth, on three evenings, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7pm to 11 pm. Teams of staff, students and volunteers go out onto the streets to encounter, develop conversation and listen to young people and where appropriate offer guidance or support.

The project also works in schools; St Johns Academy, Perth College and Perth Grammar school and delivers detached work in a similar way to the street based work.

Currently James Ballantyne coordinates this project, he works with Matthew Blakeman and Pamela Campbell who are two students, and has recruited volunteers:  Laura Barton, Lynn Jack, Allan Clyne and Douglas Taylor.

The project has encountered and built up relationships with many young people in the past 2 years, young people talk to us about many issues that they have, some have gone onto return back to school or find employment, others just want someone who listens to their story , respecting and not judging them. It is a hugely enjoyable experience being on the streets, being with young people being positive and supportive in their lives.

Full Training and supervision is given as part of the role of volunteer, and you can commit to the minimum of one evening session per month.
