For those of you that haven’t yet heard – The staff at Perth & District YMCA are quite mad.
We have committed ourselves to 104 miles of hardcore cycling from Perth to Fort William, 11 miles climbing up Ben Nevis and 22 miles canoeing along Loch Ness. A “Y-Athlon,” if you will, from Perth to Inverness this June. All in three days.
Training commenced in March with fitness tests, fitness plans and (most horrifyingly) the beginning of one long sugar-free month. Of course, this very quickly became a game of sugar paparazzi and shots like these were viciously fired:
(to be fair, he was out cycling)
swiftly followed by this:
…and many photos like these
Throughout March, we were also challenged to find individual sponsors for the Y-Athlon. Though some of us are still searching, we have found some extremely generous local businesses that immediately recognised our cause and supported it without hesitation.
We have agreed to take on this challenge to show the young people we work with that, although we are constantly encouraging them to extend their comfort zone and stretch their capacity, we are also willing to become uncomfortable and challenged to the point of great change.
Money raised through the Y-Athlon will enable us to continue to empower young people to be all that they can be through activities and residentials that encourage not only physical, but holistic development.
