Your Time existed to support young people aged 17-25 into sustained employment. Improving the employability of young people is something that we have prided ourselves on for many years. This project worked with a variety of young people but had a particular focus on helping young people with a background of offending.
All too often we had young people come to us saying, “Employers say they want us to have experience, but how do we get experience?” To help with this, we offered valuable work experience through our social enterprises and with the variety of employers we have connected with. This means young people could get the experience of a real working environment whilst being managed by a youth worker.
There were also times when a young person’s barrier to employment wasn’t as clear as qualifications or experience. Sometimes it was underneath the surface. It could have been low confidence, social anxiety, or naïvety about what is expected from them when in a job. Through using the youth work approach, we enabled young people to gradually overcome those barriers and reach their goal of being employed.
